Learn Ba Zi — Part 3: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are the alphabet of Ba Zi. Every pillar is made of one Stem and one Branch, and understanding their individual qualities is essential for reading any chart.
The 10 Heavenly Stems (天干)
The Stems represent celestial energy — the visible, active, "heavenly" aspect of each pillar. Each Stem has an element, a yin/yang polarity, and a distinct personality archetype:
Yang Wood (甲, Jia) — The Towering Tree: Ambitious, expansive, noble. Natural leader who thinks big and inspires others. Challenge: attention to detail and knowing when to compromise.
Yin Wood (乙, Yi) — The Flowering Vine: Graceful, adaptable, persistent. Grows around obstacles rather than confronting them directly. Skilled diplomat and creative problem-solver.
Yang Fire (丙, Bing) — The Blazing Sun: Radiant, warm, generous, charismatic. Attracts people naturally with warmth and optimism. Challenge: avoiding burnout from giving too much.
Yin Fire (丁, Ding) — The Candle Flame: Refined, sensitive, steady, intimate. Burns quietly but persistently. Deeply perceptive and devoted to those closest to them.
Yang Earth (戊, Wu) — The Great Mountain: Solid, dependable, trustworthy, unwavering. The foundation of any team or family. Patient and calm in every situation.
Yin Earth (己, Ji) — The Fertile Soil: Nurturing, receptive, wise, supportive. Creates conditions for growth in others. Natural teacher, healer, and behind-the-scenes force.
Yang Metal (庚, Geng) — The Raw Ore: Strong, determined, cutting, direct. Cuts through obstacles with precision and courage. Natural in competitive or challenging environments.
Yin Metal (辛, Xin) — The Polished Jade: Refined, elegant, perfectionist, discerning. Appreciates quality and beauty. Has an eye for detail and high standards for everything.
Yang Water (壬, Ren) — The Vast Ocean: Deep, powerful, strategic, free-flowing. Operates on a grand scale with profound intuition and emotional depth.
Yin Water (癸, Gui) — The Gentle Rain: Mystical, intuitive, adaptive, penetrating. Seeps into hidden places and accesses deep knowledge. Spiritually attuned and creatively gifted.

The 12 Earthly Branches (地支)
The Branches represent earthly, internal, and hidden energies — the "terrestrial" aspect. Each Branch is an animal sign with an element and specific qualities:
- 子 (Zi, Rat) — Yang Water: Intelligent, resourceful, adaptive, strategic. Quick-thinking survivor. Winter season.
- 丑 (Chou, Ox) — Yin Earth: Diligent, dependable, persistent, traditional. Steady, patient worker. Winter season.
- 寅 (Yin, Tiger) — Yang Wood: Brave, competitive, confident, adventurous. Natural pioneer. Spring season.
- 卯 (Mao, Rabbit) — Yin Wood: Gentle, diplomatic, artistic, cautious. Values peace and harmony. Spring season.
- 辰 (Chen, Dragon) — Yang Earth: Ambitious, charismatic, powerful, visionary. Larger-than-life energy. Spring season.
- 巳 (Si, Snake) — Yin Fire: Wise, intense, strategic, mysterious. Deep thinker and planner. Summer season.
- 午 (Wu, Horse) — Yang Fire: Passionate, energetic, independent, adventurous. Loves freedom. Summer season.
- 未 (Wei, Goat) — Yin Earth: Creative, gentle, sensitive, harmonious. Artistic and nurturing. Summer season.
- 申 (Shen, Monkey) — Yang Metal: Clever, innovative, versatile, witty. Problem-solver and inventor. Autumn season.
- 酉 (You, Rooster) — Yin Metal: Precise, organized, observant, perfectionist. Values order and quality. Autumn season.
- 戌 (Xu, Dog) — Yang Earth: Loyal, protective, principled, honest. Fiercely devoted to values. Autumn season.
- 亥 (Hai, Pig) — Yin Water: Generous, easy-going, pleasure-loving, intuitive. Enjoys life's comforts. Winter season.
Stem-Branch Combinations
The Stems and Branches combine to form 60 unique pairs (the sexagenary cycle). The combination creates a specific energy that's different from its parts. For example:
- Jia Zi (甲子) — Yang Wood Rat: New beginning, hidden potential, seed waiting for spring
- Bing Wu (丙午) — Yang Fire Horse: Peak yang energy, maximum heat, powerful and demanding
- Gui Hai (癸亥) — Yin Water Pig: Deep water, profound intuition, spiritual depth
Each of the 60 combinations has unique characteristics that color the pillar it occupies. Exploring these combinations for your own chart pillars reveals deeper layers of meaning.

How Stems and Branches Interact
The real power of Ba Zi analysis comes from understanding how Stems and Branches interact within and between pillars:
- Stem-Branch Interaction: The Stem sits "on top" of the Branch. Does the Stem's element produce, drain, or conflict with the Branch's element? A Jia Wood Stem on a Zi Water Branch (甲子) — Water produces Wood, a supportive relationship. A Bing Fire Stem on a Zi Water Branch (丙子) — Water controls Fire, a conflicting relationship.
- Stem-Stem Interaction: Stems in adjacent pillars interact. Bing (Yang Fire) and Xin (Yin Metal) combine to form Water — a transformation that changes both their natures.
- Branch-Branch Interaction: Branches form harmony (合), clash (冲), punishment (刑), and other relationships. These are major factors in determining the quality of relationships, health, and timing of events.
In Part 4, we'll put it all together by examining how the Five Elements interact within your chart — the generating and controlling cycles that determine your elemental balance and life patterns. → Continue to Part 4: The Five Elements in Practice
