Five Elements (Wu Xing)
The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — are the fundamental building blocks of Chinese metaphysics. In Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny), your birth chart contains a unique combination of these elements that shapes your personality, strengths, challenges, and life path.
The Five Elements
Each element represents a different energy pattern. Click to explore each one in depth.
Wood
木 (Mù)
Wood is the element of spring and new beginnings. Like a tree reaching toward the sun, Wood energy is about growth, expansion, and pushing forward. People with strong Wood energy are natural visionaries — they see the big picture and inspire others to grow. Wood needs balance: too much leads to rigidity and impatience; too little leads to lack of direction.
Fire
火 (Huǒ)
Fire is the element of summer, passion, and transformation. It represents warmth, illumination, and the spark of life itself. Fire people are natural-born leaders who light up every room they enter. They thrive on excitement and are driven by their hearts. But like a real flame, Fire needs fuel and control — too strong and it consumes everything; too weak and it extinguishes.
Earth
土 (Tǔ)
Earth is the element of stability, nourishment, and the center. Just as the earth supports all life, Earth energy provides the foundation for everything else. Earth people are the rock of their communities — dependable, nurturing, and always there when needed. They think in terms of sustainability and long-term security. Earth energy is about coming home to yourself.
Metal
金 (Jīn)
Metal is the element of autumn, structure, and refinement. Like ore that is forged into steel, Metal energy is about discipline, precision, and inner strength. Metal people have an innate sense of justice and order. They set high standards — for themselves and others — and have the determination to meet them. Metal energy governs boundaries, both physical and emotional.
Water
水 (Shuǐ)
Water is the element of winter, wisdom, and flow. Water is the softest substance yet can carve through rock over time. Water people are deeply intuitive and emotionally intelligent. They adapt to any situation, flowing around obstacles rather than confronting them head-on. Water energy represents the deep, unconscious mind and the wellspring of inner wisdom.
The Cycle of Creation and Control
🔄 Generating Cycle
Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood
This is the creative, nurturing cycle. Each element supports the next.
⚔️ Controlling Cycle
Wood breaks Earth → Earth absorbs Water → Water extinguishes Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood
This is the balancing cycle. Each element keeps another in check.
How Elements Affect Your Ba Zi
In your Ba Zi chart, the balance of the five elements reveals your natural strengths and potential challenges. Each of the four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour) contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, each associated with one of the five elements.
The Day Master (the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar) is you. Its element represents your core personality. The other elements in your chart show the energies surrounding you — your environment, your career, your relationships.
When an element is missing from your chart, it represents an area of life that may need extra attention and cultivation. When an element is over-abundant, it may create imbalance that needs to be moderated.
