The Structure: Four Pillars, Eight Characters
Your chart is organized into four columns (pillars), each representing a dimension of your life:
Year Pillar (年柱): Family background, early environment, ancestry
Month Pillar (月柱): Career, parents, inner emotional world
Day Pillar (日柱): YOU (Day Master) + spouse/partner
Hour Pillar (时柱): Children, late-life fortune, legacy
Each pillar has two rows — the Heavenly Stem (top) and Earthly Branch (bottom). That's 8 characters total (八字), which is why Ba Zi is called the "Eight Characters."
Step 1: Find Your Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar (third column, top character). This is the most important element in your chart.
Your Day Master represents your core self. Everything else in the chart is analyzed in relation to this character. For example, if your Day Master is 甲 (Jia — Yang Wood), you have the energy of a towering tree — visionary, expansive, and naturally commanding.

Step 2: Analyze Elemental Balance
Each of the 8 characters in your chart has an associated element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water). Count how many times each element appears:
