The Bagua Map (八卦) is the most essential tool in Feng Shui. It's an energy map that divides any space into nine areas, each corresponding to a different aspect of life — wealth, fame, love, family, health, creativity, knowledge, career, and helpful people. Understanding and applying the Bagua Map is the foundation of all Feng Shui practice. Here's your complete guide.

What Is the Bagua Map?

"Bagua" literally translates to "eight trigrams" in Chinese. The Bagua Map is an octagonal or square grid that maps eight life areas (plus the center) onto the layout of your home, room, or even your desk. Each area has: - A specific life aspect it governs - An associated element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) - Colors that activate its energy - Shapes and objects that enhance it

The Nine Bagua Areas

1. Wealth & Abundance (东南/Southeast — Wood Element) Associated with prosperity, abundance, and material wealth. Activate this area with plants, purple and green colors, and flowing water features. Place symbols of abundance like a wealth bowl or coins. This is the most commonly activated bagua area. 2. Fame & Reputation (南/South — Fire Element) Associated with how others see you, your reputation, and your place in the world. Activate with red colors, candles, lights, and items that represent your goals. Display awards, diplomas, or recognition here. 3. Love & Relationships (西南/Southwest — Earth Element) Associated with romantic partnerships and self-love. Activate with pairs of objects (two candles, two crystals), pink and red colors, and earth tones. This area should always feel welcoming and harmonious. 4. Family & Health (东/East — Wood Element) Associated with family bonds, ancestors, and physical health. Activate with living plants, green colors, and family photos. Keep this area clutter-free for good health energy. 5. Center (中宫 — Earth Element) The Tai Chi — the energetic heart of your home. This area connects all other areas. Activate with earth tones, square shapes, and a central light fixture. The center should always be open and uncluttered. 6. Creativity & Children (西/West — Metal Element) Associated with creative projects, self-expression, and children. Activate with white and pastel colors, metal objects, and artwork. Display children's artwork or creative projects here. 7. Knowledge & Wisdom (东北/Northeast — Earth Element) Associated with learning, self-cultivation, and spiritual growth. Activate with books, educational materials, and earth tones. A small meditation space works well here. 8. Career & Life Path (北/North — Water Element) Associated with your career journey and life direction. Activate with black and blue colors, flowing shapes, and water features. Mirrors can help expand career opportunities. 9. Helpful People & Travel (西北/Northwest — Metal Element) Associated with mentors, networking, travel, and divine assistance. Activate with metal objects, white and gray colors, and images of places you want to visit.

How to Apply the Bagua Map

Method 1: The Front Door Approach Stand at your front door looking into your home. The back wall of your home represents the Career area. The front door area represents Knowledge/Self-Cultivation or Helpful People depending on which wall it's on. Map the nine areas based on the floor plan. Method 2: The Room-by-Room Approach For a specific room, stand at the room's entrance and map the bagua grid onto the room's floor plan. This works for bedrooms, living rooms, home offices, and even desks. Important: The Bagua Map applies to the floor plan, not the wall placement. Missing areas (like an L-shaped room) can be rectified with a mirror or by placing symbols at the boundary.

Bagua Enhancements by Area

Wealth Corner: Place a small fountain, lucky bamboo, or citrine crystal in the southeast area of your living room. Never place your trash can here. Love Corner: Always use pairs of objects in the southwest — two red candles, two rose quartz crystals. Keep this area free of single-item imagery. Career Center: A mirror facing the front door can reflect career opportunities. Black accents and a water feature in the north support career growth. Fame Center: Keep this area well-lit. Use your full name and professional titles here. Fire element objects like candles and triangle shapes activate fame energy.

Common Bagua Mistakes

Missing the center: In open floor plans, define the center with a rug, light fixture, or central coffee table. Active toilet in wealth/knowledge areas: Bathrooms in auspicious bagua areas drain energy. Keep the toilet lid closed and bathroom door shut. Clutter in any area: Clutter blocks the specific energy of that bagua area. Keep all areas clean and intentional.
