The 10 Gods (十神 / Shi Shen), also known as the Ten Spirits, are one of the most powerful analytical tools in Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny). They describe how your Day Master (your core self) interacts with every other element in your chart, revealing detailed patterns about your career, wealth, relationships, and life tendencies.
While the Five Elements show your energetic makeup, the 10 Gods show how that energy plays out in specific life situations.
Understanding the 10 Gods System
The 10 Gods are derived from the interaction between your Day Master and each of the other seven characters in your chart. Every character is classified into one of the 10 Gods based on:
1. Element relationship: Does the other element generate, control, or match your Day Master's element?
2. Yin/Yang polarity: Is the other element the same Yin/Yang as your Day Master, or different?
These two factors create the 10 distinct spirit types, divided into five pairs: one "Direct" (same polarity as Day Master) and one "Indirect" (opposite polarity).
The 10 Gods Explained
Wealth Gods (财星)
Direct Wealth (正财 / Zheng Cai): Represents stable income, salary, savings, and your spouse in traditional readings. People with strong Direct Wealth are financially responsible, good with budgets, and value stability. They tend to have a traditional approach to money and relationships.
Indirect Wealth (偏财 / Pian Cai): Represents windfall income, investments, business profits, and romantic affairs. Strong Indirect Wealth indicates entrepreneurial talent, risk-taking ability, and financial versatility. These people often have multiple income streams.
Officer Gods (官星)
Direct Officer (正官 / Zheng Guan): Represents authority, rules, responsibility, reputation, and your father. Strong Direct Officer indicates respect for authority, leadership ability, and a good reputation. These people are responsible and trustworthy but may feel constrained by rules.
Indirect Officer (偏官 / Qi Sha - Seven Killings): Represents challenges, competition, risk, and military/police careers. Strong Indirect Officer indicates courage, competitiveness, and the ability to handle pressure. These people thrive in challenging environments but may be prone to conflict.
Resource Gods (印星)

Talent Gods (食伤)
Eating God (食神 / Shi Shen): Represents creative expression, talent, enjoyment, and generosity. Strong Eating God indicates artistic talent, a generous nature, and enjoyment of life's pleasures. These people are naturally creative and often skilled in culinary arts or music.
Hurting Officer (伤官 / Shang Guan): Represents artistic brilliance, eloquence, innovation, and rebelliousness. Strong Hurting Officer indicates exceptional creative talent, persuasive communication, and a tendency to challenge authority. These people are brilliant but may struggle with convention.
How to Read the 10 Gods in Your Chart
Step 1: Identify your Day Master from your Ba Zi chart.
Step 2: For each of the other seven characters, determine its element relationship to your Day Master and the Yin/Yang polarity.
Step 3: Classify each character into one of the 10 Gods.
Step 4: Count how many times each God appears. The Gods that appear most frequently indicate dominant life themes.
Example: A Jia Wood (甲) Day Master with Geng Metal (庚) in the chart creates a "Seven Killings" relationship — Metal cuts Wood. This person may face significant challenges in life but will develop exceptional resilience and courage.
Dominant Gods and Life Patterns
Strong Direct Wealth + Strong Direct Officer: Traditional career success. Likely to work in established organizations with a clear career ladder. Financially responsible.
Strong Indirect Wealth + Strong Seven Killings: Entrepreneurial path. Likely to start businesses or work in high-risk, high-reward environments. Financially dynamic but volatile.
Strong Direct Resource + Strong Eating God: Academic or creative success. Likely to excel in education and creative fields. Supportive family background.
